How difficult is cello? Can I learn about myself?

I play guitar, piano, harmonica, drums, and I tend to pick up instruments quickly. I play by ear (height relative and not absolute), and I can tell very easily if the ticket is wrong / false, etc.. I understand that stringed instruments, with no frets are extremely difficult skill to master, let alone bow technique. I am currently a full time student w / a part time job, that is to say, I have little time and extra money. As as such, I have no time for lessons, or surplus cash to fund them. What little time I did that I devote to my music and arts, and I love the beautiful soft voice of a cello well. I like both the violin and bass, but I do not have enough space for a low and I fear that the violin fingerings will be much more difficult. I ask bowed instrument players this question: Can I learn cello on my own (probably w / books) with no education live?

The cello is very different from those of other instruments. Although you can try Learning from a book I would really recommend getting a teacher to begin. It need not be a teacher surprising that costs $ 50 an hour ... but have just one kind of teacher. Search around. You may be able to someone who will teach for the enjoyment of it, or at least for a very low price. I did that for a while. Once you learn the basics, if we wanted to end the lessons and see for yourself, I think it would be fairly easy.
