Is buying a Violin sharmusic.com be a waste?

I'm about to start violin lessons, but I need to buy a first violin. The person who will be teaching me said I should order one of Shar, so I've looked online and they have a number of violins and many beginners different price ranges. I've heard that buying violins online is generally a bad thing, so I wanted opinions. I know it will not measure, I just want to know if I'll be able to learn about it. Finally, I want a custom made violin but on my budget, the college student my price range is only $ 300-400

I taught music in schools in New York from 1971 to 2008.
